CASTRO AGAIN PROVES HE IS BEST ORATOR OF THE YEAR By Tania Quintero, Cuba Free Press.
HAVANA - One can be either for or against the elderly Cuban governor and his arguments and contentions. But that he is a great orator was again demonstrated in the last week of October.
After having seen his participation retransmitted by TV, as usual, during the VIII Iberomamerican Summit of the Chiefs of State at Oporto, Portugal, and again when he later visited Spain, televiewers were able to see even more of him during an extensive interview by the CNN correspondent in Cuba, Lucía Newman.
And then, during the next three days, the official state TV program covered the six hours that Castro spent with more than a score of North American editors. They visited and studied the mayor of the Antilles from October 21 to 25.
Even before all these activities, the island Commandant received the "Gold Microphone" awarded by the Spanish Association of Communicators. And more recently, the Society for Translation and Interpreting Services, with its headquarters in this capital, awarded him the first "Orator of the Year" prize. This group's principal mission is to transcribe to many languages the lengthy harangues of Fidel Castro.
It is not known exactly what motives brought about this new series of performances, which showed a certain benevolence. "The questions were interesting," said one interviewer, "but even more so were his answers."
