GOVERNMENT PUTS PRISONER OF CONSCIENCE IN SOLITARY CONFINEMENT By Héctor Trujillo Pis, Cuba Free Press.
CAIBARIÉN - The government has placed Cecilio Monteagudo Sánchez, prisoner of conscience, in solitary confinement - and deprived of any personal belongings -in the Guamajal prison of Santa Clara province. Monteagudo is a member of the Democratic Solidarity Party of Villa Clara.
According to information from Librado Linares Garcia, secretary general of the Cuban Reflection Movement, Monteagudo was isolated as punishment and also has been cut off from visits from family members. Some of these privileges may be restored to him after 21 days.
Several weeks ago, Monteagudo was awakened early one morning and called to order by José Ruiz Collado, a "re-educator," for the purpose of psychological menaces.
The re-educator told Monteagudo that if he continues to try to disseminate copies of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and other related matters among the prisoners, he will find himself faced again with the common criminals.
Monteagudo, a peaceful dissident, has already been a victim of repeated attacks and threats by the gendarmes, who also have told him he will be beaten by the non-political prisoners, transferred to Area Number 3, where the most dangerous criminals are kept, and will have his books and magazines confiscated.
The Cuban Reflection Movement has urgently sought to reach international and national public opinion, especially human rights organizations, to get them to denounce the repressive measures of the Guamajal jailers against Monteagudod.
