PRO-DEMOCRACY MOVEMENT FINDS NEW NICHE IN SANTIAGO By Margarita Yero, Cuba Free Press.

SANTIAGO de Cuba - A new forum called "Open Debate" has begun at the "Pedro Luis Boitel" library in this provincial capital. The forum is sponsored by the Pro Human Rights Movement for Motherland, Independence and Freedom.

The project opened October 10 on the anniversary of the Shout (Grito) of the Demajagua, which, led by Carlos Manuel de Cespedes, marked the beginning of the Cuban war of independence from Spain at the end of the last century. During the first debate, the main topic was "the political views of Cespedes" (the Father of His Country, as he is known to Cubans).

"Open Debate" is another attempt by the peaceful opposition movement to consolidate the small space granted in which all Cubans can express themselves freely. It begins a broader effort which will include seminars, conferences, recitals and social/civic activities of all types, in a serious and sustained attempt to set the groundwork for the civil society which Cubans long for.
