HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION REQUESTS RELEASE OF "GROUP OF FOUR" By Héctor Trujillo Pis, Cuba Free Press.
CAIBARIEN - The Executive Committee of the José Martí National Commission of Human Rights has asked the Government of Fidel Castro for the release of the four authors of the internationally circulated document "The Motherland Belongs to All of Us:" Vladimiro Roca Antúnez, Beatriz Roque Cabello, Félix Bonne Carcassés y René Gómez Manzano. They have been in jail for over a year.
A spokesperson for the Commission said the request includes the admonition that "to place more opposition members in jail is not the solution needed to emerge from the political and economic stagnation in which the nations lies."
The group urged the government to stop the suffering and the use of the jails to attempt to break those who resist the demands of the repression.
The document said the patriots and Cuban members of dissenting group will Always have three ways to defend themselves: 1) To declare themselves innocent of the charges against them and to maintain that the basis of the sentence is an illegitimate procedure; 2) to question the terms of the underlying legislation, alleging that the acts of the four are not criminal and that it is the government that has given them the criminal character in order to quiet them, and 3) to object to the sentence by making it known that the acts which the government labels as criminal are justifiable because of the government's profound violation of human rights.
