AREA POLICE CHIEF DETAINS OPPOSITION LEADERS IN SANTA CLARA By Ricardo González Alfonso, Cuba Free Press.
HAVANA - Two pacific opposition leaders, Lazaro García Cernuda, 35, and Julio Santos González, 50, are being detained in the province of Villa Clara, accused of attempting an illegal departure from the country.
Garcia Cernuda, of Havana, is secretary general of the Pro Human Rights party affiliated with the Adrei Sakharov Foundation, and Santos González is the organizer of the same group.
According to the information provided to Cuba Free Press by Vicky Ruiz, President of the Cuban Committee of Opposition Leaders (Comité Cubano de Opositores Pacíficos), Lázaro García was visiting the home of Julio Santos when the area chief of police made the arrests.
An officer of the Office of Secret Service (OSS) by the name of Yuri, told Nora Laya Cabrera, wife of Santos, that the accusation was filed at the province capital.
Meanwhile, authorities transferred the dissidents to the Department of Investigations in the city of Santa Clara. "They do not accept the charges of attempted illegal departure from the country" Laya Cabrera told this correspondent.
Cuba Cuba Free Press also learned that last May 15 Officer Yuri advised Noral Laya he would make it "impossible" for her to travel to the United States, despite the fact that she is the beneficiary of a visa lottery. She said the OSS officer also threatened her with "fabricating a non-political charge."
